I’m going to hell – see you there!

Sometimes you find a book that demands to be read. One that almost jumps off the thrift store bookshelf into your hands with a title so gripping you can’t wait to devour every page. Here is an example I found last week…

‘Backward Masking Unmasked’ (Backward Satanic Messages of Rock and Roll Exposed) by Jacob Aranza (1983)

“The sinister nature of rock and roll music is one of the burning issues of our time.” (Introduction – vii)

You just have to respect any book that claims to “tell it like it is” but I was disappointed that by page 5 “backward masking” had been pretty much covered by the author who then moved on and began his bludgeoning of sex, drugs, occultism, alternative lifestyles, cults and other religions – almost any or everything as practiced by the many purveyors and fans of the dreaded “rock and roll” – the name of which originally came from “the ghetto term for premarital sex”. (p. 21)

Readers are warned to beware of their rock and roll “idols”. Here are a few examples-

Eagles – “…continued listening could be harmful. Don’t forget, BIRDS OF A FEATHER FLOCK TOGETHER!” (p. 20)

Led Zeppelin – “…is on no stairway to heaven but rather, if you pardon the expression, on the HIGHWAY TO HELL!” (p. 61) (AC/DC is also criticized)

Alan Parsons Project – “How many young people listening to Eve fully realize that the theme of the album is VD?” (p. 65)

Beach Boys – “…one of the first public groups to help launch TM (Transcendental Meditation) and Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s occult teaching into the minds of the masses.” (p. 67)

The Beatles – “Their music brought with it a tidal wave of drugs, sex and the occult.” (p. 67)

Captain and Tennille – “Both share the same ideas and interests: ecology, vegetarian diets, a belief in reincarnation, karmic theory and your basic eternal bliss.” (p. 77) (OMG! Who knew?)

Alice Cooper – “…hellish and sexual overtones that Alice uses don’t make it very hard to believe that he is going to hell and leading many there along with him.” (p. 77)  (wonder how the author views the fact that Alice Cooper is openly Christian? Hmm?)

Dr. Hook – “Many who listen to them are sadly living out their perverted songs.” (p. 79)

The Grateful Dead – “I’m sure many will be grateful when their music is dead.” (p. 82) (seems like the author does possess a sense of humor)

Jefferson Starship – “A warning to those interested in flying with Jefferson Starship: their flight pattern ends in death.” (p. 87)

Ted Nugent – “His perverted songs come from a perverted lifestyle.” (p. 99) (based on Ted’s fondness for meals made from roadkill)

The Police – “My caution about this group is simple and practical: watch out for The Police.” (p. 101) (paranoid conspiracy theorists everywhere agree with that statement)

Back Sabbath, Ozzy, KISS (Kids in Satan’s Service), Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, plus many others were on the receiving end of the author’s judgmental damnation including (WTF?) John Denver. I was also surprised how easy Aranza went on Patti (Jesus died for somebody’s sins but not mine) Smith.

I could go on but will wind this up with some images from my collection of two targets Aranza took special aim at: Aleister Crowley and Anton LaVey. Aranza claims Crowley gave us the idea of backward mask by teaching “…that you should learn to talk backwards, write backwards and play phonograph records backwards.” (p. 12) LaVey, founder of the first satanic church and author of the Satanic Bible, inspired The Rolling Stones’ Satanic Majesties Request – “the unofficial anthem for all satanic churches” (p. 15)

AMEN!

About Marcus

Who me? Introverted, neurotic, self-absorbed, increasingly cynical observer of human nature and part time social critic in hiding. Most of my life spent avoiding growing up. The naive idealistic passions of youth have evolved into the eclectic eccentricities of adulthood. Northeast Florida small-town native, related to people I can't relate to. Simultaneously my own best friend and worst enemy. Politically and spiritually unaffiliated, my personal ideologies put me all over the map or off it completely.
