They Shoot Horseplayers, er, Aliens, Don’t They?

‘Overlay’ by Barry N. Malzberg (1972)

A science fiction novel that taught me more about horse racing and the mindset of people who are addicted to betting on horses than I ever thought I’d know (or care to). But I was taken in and held tight by the story the entire way thru.

“It is understood that the use these people make of “astrology” is megalomaniacal and insane.” (p. 35)

“He is very prone to fantasies…and allows then to create more internal disorder then, possibly, they are worth. Most of (his) problems come from the fact that…he has an imagination and compulsion far beyond the reach of his sensibility.” (p. 69)

About Marcus

Who me? Introverted, neurotic, self-absorbed, increasingly cynical observer of human nature and part time social critic in hiding. Most of my life spent avoiding growing up. The naive idealistic passions of youth have evolved into the eclectic eccentricities of adulthood. Northeast Florida small-town native, related to people I can't relate to. Simultaneously my own best friend and worst enemy. Politically and spiritually unaffiliated, my personal ideologies put me all over the map or off it completely.
