Tradition

The college where I earned my A.S. degree, St Johns River Community College(Palatka, FL), is considering another name change. (my 1976 diploma says “St. Johns River Junior College” the name it was founded under) The list of suggested names includes “Northeast Florida State College”. You can’t get much more generic (or blander) than that. Of course it might be my fate to only hold degrees from schools which no longer exist except on paper. My bachelor’s diploma says “Florida Technological University” but good luck finding FTU on a map. However, I’m pretty sure anyone can tell you where to find “University of Central Florida”. FTU changed its name to UCF the month after I graduated in 1978. As part of FTU’s Student Government at the time we, along with most of the current students, opposed any change. Suggested alternatives such as “University of Florida at Walt Disney World” (based on the local economy) and “Florida University of Cape Kennedy” (besides the cool acronym the original plan was for FTU to supply engineers to the nearby space program) shows just how serious we were about the process. Since this seems to be working in reverse my high school is probably next in line.

About Marcus

Who me? Introverted, neurotic, self-absorbed, increasingly cynical observer of human nature and part time social critic in hiding. Most of my life spent avoiding growing up. The naive idealistic passions of youth have evolved into the eclectic eccentricities of adulthood. Northeast Florida small-town native, related to people I can't relate to. Simultaneously my own best friend and worst enemy. Politically and spiritually unaffiliated, my personal ideologies put me all over the map or off it completely.
