Things ain’t like they used to be…

I don’t think it is any great coincidence the year I became a teenager, 1969, was also the year I became obsessed with music. One of the first records I purchased with my own money, scraped together from a 25 cents per week allowance and turning in empty soda bottles, was the 45 RPM single ‘See’ by the Rascals. Yep, that’s the very same one pictured above that I’ve managed to save for the past 39 years. I guess the fact that it was the first among thousands of vinyl purchases (mostly albums) I’d make, plus my newfound enthusiasm for rock ‘n’ roll at the time has kept it in my heart as a sentimental favorite from back then even though I recall my other record-collecting friends not liking it. So when I earned some free download credits thru amazon.com for the mp3 player purchase I made, ‘See’ (the longer 5 minute album version – not the shorter single) was one of the songs I chose.

If you’ve not heard it and are inclined to, be aware it’s unlike the tunes The Rascals were best known for. I think of it as more psychedelic than their normal stuff. Below are the lyrics. If you are curious I recommend you find it and listen.

See/The Rascals (Felix Cavaliere – 1969)

Things ain’t like they used to be
Love’s the only thing I see
Wings of life are taking flight
From the darkness to the light

I used to try and fly away
Upon the flood of dreams
Tasting all the good and bad
From on the serpents tree
Little ones remind us of a place we used to be
Echoes of the ever land
Discover who you areally am

Rivers rushing to the sea
Love is flowing endlessly
Drops of rain are never lost
Soul and spirit to its source
Saw you in a fairy tale
Or was it just a dream
White and yellow jasmine trees
Times a mere machine
Flashes of a new year light up a stellar sky
Love is really everywhere to see it is to fly

Things ain’t like they used to be
If you want to you can see
Words of love on chestnut trees
Written by sweet memories

While we are riding on the avenues of time
The bird of life drinks from the cups of wine
Waits until we’re ready for
The princes gift of love

Things ain’t like they used to be
Love’s the only thing I see
Wings of life are taking flight
From the darkness to the light

Secret mirror photographs,
Shining in your eyes
I’m married to the universe,
My brother is the sky
Stars can see to make a wish
And hearts with wings can fly
Come with me and see my love
So we can never die

Rivers rushing to the sea
Love is flowing endlessly
Drops of rain are never lost
soul and spirit to its source

About Marcus

Who me? Introverted, neurotic, self-absorbed, increasingly cynical observer of human nature and part time social critic in hiding. Most of my life spent avoiding growing up. The naive idealistic passions of youth have evolved into the eclectic eccentricities of adulthood. Northeast Florida small-town native, related to people I can't relate to. Simultaneously my own best friend and worst enemy. Politically and spiritually unaffiliated, my personal ideologies put me all over the map or off it completely.
