Today is the 37th anniversary of the original ‘Earth Day’

I recall that day for an entirely different reason-

Don Russell Scott, HM3, USN
June 14, 1947 – April 22, 1970

son, brother, student, teacher, husband, father, friend, comrade
Navy Corpsman
(attached to USMC Company ‘Mike’ 3/7)

I’ve never visited the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall. The only name I’d recognize is on Panel 11W, Row 38. That is where it becomes personal and not just names etched in stone.

About Marcus

Who me? Introverted, neurotic, self-absorbed, increasingly cynical observer of human nature and part time social critic in hiding. Most of my life spent avoiding growing up. The naive idealistic passions of youth have evolved into the eclectic eccentricities of adulthood. Northeast Florida small-town native, related to people I can't relate to. Simultaneously my own best friend and worst enemy. Politically and spiritually unaffiliated, my personal ideologies put me all over the map or off it completely.

Many, many years ago, the Moving Wall — a reduced-size duplicate of the memorial — visited town. The newspaper I was working for invited relatives of people whose names are on the wall to send us the honored person’s photograph and some biographical information for a special section we published in conjunction with the Moving Wall’s visit.
I was in charge of that publication: laying out all the pages, sizing the photographs and writing the profiles of the honored dead based on the notes their relatives sent. I was surprised by the number of people from our circulation area whose names are on that wall, related in one way or another to people I knew or knew of. About halfway through writing up the individual stories, I just broke down and wept.
