Early Saturday morning a local teenage high school senior driving drunk at 65 MPH the wrong way on Interstate 485 collided with another vehicle killing the two adult occupants. The teen survived but is hospitalized. Due to privacy regulations his condition is unknown. The newspaper reported bleeding in the brain and a lacerated liver.
Sure, the individual personal acts and resulting outcome were stupid and tragic. This is not the first time an incident like this has occurred on 485 but beyond the usual pattern of unfortunate behavior we have additional information that I find interesting. We know something about the teen in his own words thanks to information he posted on ‘myspace’; reproduced and presented for anyone to read by the Charlotte Observer.
From his online profile we know how the teen saw himself- “I am a (expletive) redneck who parties with my friends all the time”. Well, OK, that could describe a very large segment of the local population regardless of age or gender. However we are also aware he likes “getting drunk and gettin high as hell”, claiming to have been smoking marijuana as he filled in his information. All this set against a wallpaper back drop of Jack Daniel’s bottles.
My curiosity is how the myspace.com information will play into the legal discussions that are sure to follow assuming he survives. Pausing to consider the broader picture, I wonder what actions might be possible based on underage myspacers (and bloggers in general) boasting about participating in illegal activities. Yes, I understand the practice, while very widespread, is in many cases just adolescent posturing for attention. But still…it makes me wonder. Stay tuned.
