Finally got around to reading some Hermann Hesse this weekend; “Siddhartha” and “The Journey to the East”. Siddhartha had a few “stop and ponder” moments but Journey didn’t do anything for me. On a whim I picked up three novels by Jerzy Kosinski from one of my favorite used bookstores. Wow. Other than the movie “Being There” I had not been exposed to Kosinski but after reading “Steps” in one sitting and now half-way thru “The Devil Tree” I’m hooked. Weird, strange, sexy, malevolent and frequently relevant, I can’t wait to find out what happens next.

Kosinski, a Holocaust survivor who killed himself in 1992, has received considerable criticism for his work(charges of plagiarism, using ghost writers, confabulating) but so far that hasn’t diminished my feelings while reading him.

About Marcus

Who me? Introverted, neurotic, self-absorbed, increasingly cynical observer of human nature and part time social critic in hiding. Most of my life spent avoiding growing up. The naive idealistic passions of youth have evolved into the eclectic eccentricities of adulthood. Northeast Florida small-town native, related to people I can't relate to. Simultaneously my own best friend and worst enemy. Politically and spiritually unaffiliated, my personal ideologies put me all over the map or off it completely.
