(I came across a website about “The Irritable Male Syndrome” some weeks ago and had one of those “EUREKA!” moments of self realization. Thought I would pass this along to help explain my moods.)
The Irritable Male Syndrome
Definition: A state of hypersensitivity, anxiety, frustration, and anger that occurs in males and is associated with biochemical changes, hormonal fluctuations, stress, and loss of male identity.
There are four symptoms:
* Hypersensitivity – everything is more bothersome
* Anxiety – fear and apprehensive
* Frustration – feeling blocked, criticized and defeated
* Anger – Anger can be loud or quiet. It can be expressed as hateful words, hurtful actions, or in stony silence
There are four key causes. First, biochemical changes, particularly in such brain chemicals as serotonin can lead to depression. Second, hormonal fluctuations including shifts in testosterone can trigger anger attacks, low energy, or extreme restlessness. Third, increasing stress can cause sleep disturbances, physical symptoms, and emotional upsets. Finally, relationship disruptions and changes in status or positions at work can contribute to loss of male identity.
(Odd, but just reading about me makes me feel better.)
