my season is better than your season!

Yesterday’s mail brought a seasonal catalog from a well know clothier. The words inside included a statement about Fall being “one of nature’s most beautiful seasons”. Well, OK. If you say so. But that implies there is a “least beautiful” season or seasons. With only four to choose from and without trying too hard, I can name several characteristics of each people would find beautiful. Now that I’m on the subject, how is ‘beauty’ defined? Darn those advertisers who want us to buy into the image a product projects rather than just the product itself. Does any company advertise by saying “Here is our product. If you like what you see send money.” There probably is a market made up of misanthropic consumers. But not me, I’m vain enough to occasionally try on a new image.

About Marcus

Who me? Introverted, neurotic, self-absorbed, increasingly cynical observer of human nature and part time social critic in hiding. Most of my life spent avoiding growing up. The naive idealistic passions of youth have evolved into the eclectic eccentricities of adulthood. Northeast Florida small-town native, related to people I can't relate to. Simultaneously my own best friend and worst enemy. Politically and spiritually unaffiliated, my personal ideologies put me all over the map or off it completely.

Speaking as someone who has to use catalogues and websites as part of my job. I have come to appreciate those that don’t wax lyrical or wander off into flowery prose. Once you’ve read your first couple of hundred catalogues…well, it tends to wear you down a bit. Though you do get customers, more than you might imagine, who complain about the books being a bit ‘dry’.
Sometimes y’know, you just can’t win.
