there she is…

Watched the PBS program ‘American Experience’ last night about the Miss America pageant. Interesting history lesson. The rules and regulations have really evolved since it was founded in the 1920’s. When the narrator mentioned various alternative competitions including one held by the Ku Klux Klan, my wife stopped what she was doing and asked “were the contestants required to have all their teeth?”

(rim shot sound)

My only memory of watching Miss America was sometime in the late ’60s or early ’70s when the entire family(dad, mom, sis, & me) were gathered around the television during the swimsuit competition. One contestant’s bone or muscle structure caused her to have a very noticeable gap between her upper thighs. Seeing this my mother says, “look, that girl has a hole between her legs!”

(crickets chirping)

About Marcus

Who me? Introverted, neurotic, self-absorbed, increasingly cynical observer of human nature and part time social critic in hiding. Most of my life spent avoiding growing up. The naive idealistic passions of youth have evolved into the eclectic eccentricities of adulthood. Northeast Florida small-town native, related to people I can't relate to. Simultaneously my own best friend and worst enemy. Politically and spiritually unaffiliated, my personal ideologies put me all over the map or off it completely.
