Occasionally I have read about in the paper or driven by someplace where a rural Fire Department is conducting a live training exercise. This is where some condemned, wood-frame, single family dwelling, long-ago abandoned (except by pigeons and vermin) gets torched so that local public servants are better prepared in case a real fire occurs in their district. I see a problem though. Most fires in these areas take place in mobile homes which the fire department is inadequately trained to handle. Most mobile home tenants cook with real lard which burns with a vengeance as anyone who has mishandled a deep-fryer will know. Also many trailers are inhabited by NRA members and hunters who stockpile large amounts of ammunition along with dynamite for stump removal or illegal fishing. Proper training should include a smell test to detect the odor of fried chicken before proceeding and the use of full body armor suits.
Or they could just let them burn.
