like father, like tenor sax player?

This is an older observation from one of my written journals but I feel the need to express it here for others to see.

Richard Dreyfuss seems to have the characters he plays in various movie/TV roles somehow intertwined with various famous tenor saxophone jazz musicians.

Example #1- In the movie ‘Mr. Holland’s Opus’, the character of Dreyfuss/Holland’s son is named “Cole”, which is short for Coltrane. John Coltrane’s music had some influence on Mr. Holland’s life.

Example #2- Dreyfuss’s son in the TV series ‘The Education of Max Bickford’ is named Lester and Dreyfuss regularly called him ‘Prez’. Lester Young’s nickname, given to him by Billie Holiday, was “the prez”. Music, especially jazz, played an important role in Max Bickford’s life.

(and if you don’t know who John Coltrane or Lester Young are, please find out)

Time to prepare my embouchure and blow outta here.

About Marcus

Who me? Introverted, neurotic, self-absorbed, increasingly cynical observer of human nature and part time social critic in hiding. Most of my life spent avoiding growing up. The naive idealistic passions of youth have evolved into the eclectic eccentricities of adulthood. Northeast Florida small-town native, related to people I can't relate to. Simultaneously my own best friend and worst enemy. Politically and spiritually unaffiliated, my personal ideologies put me all over the map or off it completely.
